Three brothers and a sister survive. RECRUITS BANG AWAY AFTER A 4 HOUR COURSE Illinois Troops Fire for Score BY JOHN II. THOMPSON (Chicago Tribune Press Service Camp Ripley, July 15 The blue streamer fluttering in the wind of the rifle range bore a pair of crossed baby boots in white instead of the infantry's traditional crossed rifles. The standard planted beside the range control tower Tuesday indicated to any visitor that this was the workshop of the recruit training battalion, Chicago's 131st infantry regiment, Illinois 33d national guard division. After only four hours of instruction in the regulation M-l rifle, 484 recruits were banging away on the rifle range, firing for scores.

Basic training for 1,500 recruits was a job unexpectedly saddled on the division shortly before it came to camp, when the army said it could not take the recruits as planned for six months active duty training. 20 Hour' Course "We're trying to do in 20 hours, on a very intensive what the army does in 120 hours at Fort Leonard Wood," said the recruit commander, Capt. Frank J. McKay, of 5718 N. Artesian a combat veteran of the 82d airborne With five combat qualified officers and 39 experienced noncommissioned officers, Capt.

McKay handles all weapons training of the 1,500. The downstate 130th regiment trains all recruits in tactics and the 129th regiment of northern Illinois gives them general training. The bulk of those firing Tuesday, getting rifle instruction or marching in close order drill when not firing, came from the 131st. The others were from Chicago's ordnance, medical and reconnaissance units. May March as Unit "If they look sharp enough by Saturday," said the regimental commander, Col.

Francis P. Kane, another combat veteran, "they will march as a separate unit In the review for Gov. Stratton." Most regimental officers agreed with Col. Kane that the six months recruits were of exceptionally high 'caliber Many are college graduates and students. The 131st, including the re cruits, started off its annual two weeks of field training drawing superior ratings from most of the regular army evaluating officers.
