Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Expected to avoid extended absence

    32m ago

Rockies manager Bud Black said Monday that Rodgers was diagnosed with a "mild strain" of his left hamstring and isn't expected to stay on the injured list for much longer than the minimum 10 days, MLB.com reports.

Rodgers strained his hamstring while running to first base on a sacrifice bunt attempt in last Friday's game against the Cardinals and was placed on the 10-day IL two days later. While he's not on track to be activated when first eligible next Tuesday, Rodgers looks like he might have a chance to return before the end of June, depending on how quickly he's able to resume baseball activities. Adael Amador was recalled from Double-A Hartford on Sunday and is expected to serve as the Rockies' primary second baseman for the duration of Rodgers' absence.

  • Elias Diaz COL C

Rockies manager Bud Black suggested after Monday's 5-0 loss to the Twins that Diaz will likely miss the remaining two games of the series in Minnesota due to a strained left calf, MLB.com reports. "It's right in the belly of the calf, so we'll see," Black said of the injury Diaz suffered in the first inning of Monday's game. "He's been feeling it for a couple weeks. He's been able to manage it and [in Monday's game], I think just on that particular ground ball, out of the box, it got him. We'll see in a couple of days. Keith [Duggar, the team's head athletic trainer] wants to treat it for a day or two and see where we are."

Diaz was lifted from the game in the bottom of the first after he strained his calf while running out a groundball in his first at-bat of the night in the top of the frame. Jacob Stallings came on to replace Diaz and will presumably start behind the plate for the final two games in Minnesota, and Stallings could be headed for an extended run as the Rockies' No. 1 catcher if Diaz requires a stint on the injured list. Diaz will presumably be re-examined Thursday when the Rockies return to Colorado before the team makes a decision on his availability heading into this weekend's series versus the Pirates. Diaz has been one of the few bright spots for the Rockies this season, batting .303 with five home runs, 28 RBI and 20 runs in 55 games.

Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Two hits including double Monday

    39m ago

Horwitz went 2-for-4 with a double in Monday's loss to the Brewers.

The Blue Jays only managed four hits in total on the night, but the rookie did what he could to spark some offense. Horwitz has been as advertised since his promotion, going 3-for-10 with two walks while starting three straight games at second base and batting either first or second. The 26-year-old won't supply a lot of power, but his on-base skills should lead to production if the hitters behind him can get going.

Astros' Joey Loperfido: Set to return to minors

    40m ago

Loperfido is expected to be optioned from Triple-A Sugar Land prior to Tuesday's game in San Francisco, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 in Houston reports.

Loperfido was just recalled this past Friday when Kyle Tucker (shin) went on the 10-day injured list, but he looks set to return to the minors without having received a plate appearance during his latest stint in the big leagues. Cesar Salazar is expected to be called up from Triple-A Sugar Land to provide protection at catcher while

  • Alejandro Kirk TOR C

Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: Clubs second homer

    42m ago

Kirk went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's loss to the Brewers.

The backstop took Colin Rea deep in the third inning, ending a power drought for Kirk that stretched back to April 28. While his .612 OPS and two homers on the season are a disappointment, the 25-year-old may be coming around at the plate -- over his last 10 games, Kirk's batting .308 (8-for-26).

  • Nolan Jones COL LF

Rockies' Nolan Jones: Requires more rehab time

    43m ago

The Rockies elected not to activate Jones (knee/back) from the 10-day injured list Monday as previously planned, as the club determined that the outfielder needs more time in the minors to find his proper swing, MLB.com reports.

Before he was placed on the IL on April 30 with a low-back strain, Jones had gotten off to a disappointing start to the season, slashing just .170/.243/.277 with a 35.9 percent strikeout rate over 103 plate appearances. After starting up a rehab assignment in mid-May, Jones played in just three games before being shut down with a left knee injury, but he was cleared to report back to Triple-A Albuquerque on June 2. Though Jones hasn't reported any issues with his back or knee since returning to action, he's still hitting just .231 with a 36.7 percent strikeout rate in his seven games during the second rehab assignment. The Rockies likely want to see Jones find some success in the minors prior to activating him, so the 26-year-old could remain with Albuquerque through at least Thursday before the Rockies return home Friday to begin a series with the Pirates.
