YSU’s Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner online program centers on professional nursing issues, nursing science, and research methods for building a successful, evidence-based practice. This degree emphasizes the delivery of primary care to families and individuals of all ages within the healthcare delivery system.
In this online MSN FNP program, you will gain the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors required to provide comprehensive and holistic primary care to a culturally diverse population. You will study health promotion, health maintenance, and management of common health problems pertaining to children, adolescents, women, adults and older adults, and family centered primary care with an emphasis on physical assessment, diagnosis, and management of patient care.
The program includes a supervised clinical practicum consisting of 600 hours in a variety of primary care settings. Our MSN core curriculum features an integrated capstone course, along with studies of pathophysiology, diagnostics and technologies, pharmacology and more.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing degree programs at Youngstown State University are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (ccneaccreditation.org) and approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing.

- Complete graduate admissions application and pay $45 non-refundable application fee
- BSN degree from an accredited program
- Regular admission requires a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and verification of work experience
- Minimum 1 year of recent* practice as a registered nurse by admission start date
- Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
- Verification of a current, unencumbered RN license and expiration date in the state in which the student is licensed and practices and will be completing practicum hours
Clinical Hours and Experience
Applicants will complete a Supplemental Employment Verification form as part of the application process. This is used to verify recent* clinical hours and experience.
* Recent clinical experience is defined as clinical RN work experience within 3 years of first practicum course.
- Current BLS certification, immunizations, drug screen and criminal background checks are maintained while in the program annually
The YSU online nursing programs must meet the standards of the state(s) in which authority is approved to provide education and may only admit students from those states. Online nursing students must complete the program in the state of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia or Michigan.

Analysis of health-related evidence to continuously improve quality of practice. Theory and technical skills essential to the advanced practice environment. Focuses on select technologies, informatics, telehealth, common procedures, and diagnostic tests encountered by advanced practice nurses in the clinical/practice setting.

The examination of concepts, theories, and research related to the advanced practice role. This is a supervised clinical practicum consisting of 150 hours in a variety of primary care settings. This is the final supervised clinical practicum consisting of 150 hours in a variety of primary care settings. It is designed to provide the advanced Family Nurse Practitioner student with comprehensive experiences in the integration of health promotion and management of acute and chronic health problems in individuals across the lifespan.

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)—a nationally recognized accrediting agency for baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs—is reviewing the YSU Centofanti School of Nursing for continuing accreditation in February, 2022. The following programs will be reviewed: BSN, MSN all options and post-graduate APRN certificates.
In accordance with CCNE’s procedures, the Commission provides the opportunity for program constituents and other interested parties to submit, in writing, third-party comments concerning a program’s qualifications for accreditation. Third-party comments pertaining to the Centofanti School of Nursing must be received by CCNE by January 24, 2022. Third-party comments must relate to the CCNE Standards for Accreditation of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs (2018).
All third-party comments submitted to CCNE must be written in English, consistent with CCNE’s policy on Conduct of Business in English.
