The Nationals Stadium, a $611 million baseball stadium for the Washington Nationals, first opened for the 2008 season. Officially named Nationals Park, the new stadium spearheads the revitalization of the corridor of Washington, D.C. near the Navy Yard and the Anacostia Waterfront. The 41,000-seat, state-of-the-art ballpark was designed to ensure a great viewing experience and entertainment for all. As such it has a massive high-definition scoreboard, accessible seating, excellent views of D.C., and is one of the most environmentally-friendly baseball stadiums in the country.
What to Do at Nationals Park
Beyond watching baseball, fans can take a tour of the park. There are a variety of tours you can take depending on if it's a game day or not. Prices range from $15 to $25 and often include a discount to the Nationals gift store.
An interactive kids area includes a GEICO Racing Presidents Photo Station, Sony Playstation Pavilion, Exxon Strike Zone and Build-A-Bear workshop, batting cage, pitchers cage, and a playground. These amenities open three hours prior to the start of each game.
Yards Park and the Capitol Riverfrontis located to the east of the ballpark along the Anacostia River and is home to many restaurants and entertainment venues. You can easily walk to this area to enjoy a meal or snack before or after a game or event at Nationals Park. If you have some extra time, stroll along theAnacostia Riverwalk Trailand take in some views of the waterfront.
What to Eat
- The Red Porch Restaurant in the Center Field Plaza: Open two-and-a-half hours before game time. The menu features three styles of wings, including Thai-style chili wings, an Italian chopped salad pizza, and a selection of Minor League Kids Meals. The Red Porch also features a variety of draft beers and a selection of American micro-brew craft beers. Outdoor dining patios are located on both sides of the restaurant with an awning covering the Center Field Plaza tables. Sliding glass panels and roll-up glass doors allow fans to experience the sights and sounds of the ballpark while enjoying their meal indoors.
- Concessions Throughout the Park: Menus include regional dishes and innovative versions of DC’s favorites. Four new concessions concepts will be introduced at the park including a Healthy Plate cart, featuring healthy wraps, fresh salads, vegetables and hummus, and fresh fruit; The Pit at the Red Loft, opening mid-season and serving traditional pit barbeque prepared on a charcoal grill; a barbeque concession stand, also opening mid-season on the main concourse, serving ribs, pulled pork and brisket; and the Triple Play Grill, located in the Left Field V and offering a pulled pork sandwich and foot-long Crab Louie sandwich. The team offers three value meals at various stands: the Nats Dog Meal, Nats Dog, 16-oz. soda and chips; Nacho Value Pack, small nachos and two 16-oz sodas; and the Popcorn Value Pack, 12-oz popcorn tub and two 16-oz sodas.
Getting There
Nationals Park is located in Southeast Washington, D.C. along the Anacostia River near the Washington Navy Yard. The easiest way to get there is by public transportation. The Navy Yard Metro stop is about a half-block from the main entrance and Many Metrorail stations have parking lots where you can leave your car. Even better, parking is free on weekends and federal holidays.
If you do decide to drive, plan for long commute times as heavy traffic causes congestion onI-295, I-395, and the SE/SW Freeway. The streets adjacent to the ballpark will be closed for three hours before the start of the game and may stay closed for up to three hours after the game ends, causing even more delays.
Once you arrive at the stadium there are seven available parking lots available. Some of them require a considerable walk and while the lots open between two-and-a-half and three hours before the game starts, all of them close one hour after the game ends.
Tickets
Individual ticket prices range from $5 to $325 (2017 prices), with $5 tickets available only at the Nationals Park Box Office on the day of the game.
